The EXR file format is the professional-grade image storage format of the motion picture industry, developed specifically for high dynamic range and color precision. OpenEXR is an open source project working to keep the format reliable and modern, with industry codebase contributors including Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks and Sony Pictures.
They had an existing logo that they wanted to update with a fresh concept, while maintaining their current colour scheme. We explored concepts ranging from focusing on the idea of a file format, the project name, and the film industry, to the concept that was ultimately chosen: three layered image thumbnails showing different lighting conditions to convey the high dynamic range that the format is best known for.
